Ahead of the London 2012 Olympic Games, notable Nigerian celebrities have been chosen to join the rest of the world in the Olympic torch relay. Celebrities such as Steve ‘Yaw’ Onu (On Air Personality) Kanu Nwankwo (ex-Nigerian International footballer), Banky W (musician), Funke Akindele Oloyede (actress) and Sasha(musician) have all been chosen as the Olympic torch bearers in Nigeria. This is not the first time that the Olympic torch will be coming to Nigeria. In 2004 (Athens Olympic Games), when the Olympic torch came to Africa for the first time since its inception, late Pastor Bimbo Odukoya was chosen to be the bearer. Likewise in 2008 (Beijing Olympic Games), Eedris Abdulkareem was the first Nigerian artiste to bear the Olympic Torch. The Torch symbolises peace and an embodiment of the Olympic Truce, which promotes the ideals of peace and conflict resolution and the premise that individuals, not countries, compete against each other in sports, in peaceful competition without the burden of politics, religion or racism. The Olympic Torch and Relay history goes back to the ancient Olympic Games in Greece. The Torch and Relay were important elements of the cultural festivals surrounding the Olympic Games of Ancient Greece. The Torch bearers will be lighting the torch and carry it on Sunday, July 1st. All the best people. Show them love.. comment your wishes for them.
