Nigerian held for faking Indian currency

A Nigerian national has been arrested in India for allegedly being involved in making fake currency, police said on Tuesday. According to the Press Trust of India, John Sheriff, was arrested from Ahmedabad railway station after he left behind a bag that contained material used for making fake currency at the rickshaw stand, police said. Sheriff had come from Delhi and stayed at a guest house and identified himself as an employee of a Delhi-based company, they said. He checked out from the guest house this morning to leave for Delhi by Jammu-Tawi Express but left behind his bag near the rickshaw stand from where he hired an auto rickshaw to reach Rajkot railway station. However, two rickshaw drivers Salim Ashraf and Iqbal Modi saw the abandoned bag and informed the police who found it containing material used in making fake currency, fifty blank papers and some chemical. Police said the rickshaw driver, who had ferried Sheriff to the railway station, and the manager of the guest house, where he stayed, said the Nigerian was carrying the same bag. Police sub inspector M.L Rathod, who is investigating the case immediately informed Ahmedabad RPF police about the incident who, in turn, arrested Sheriff at Kalupur railway station, sources said. Preliminary investigation showed his visa had expired on April 9 and he was staying in India illegally, sources said. “Ahmedabad RPF has arrested John Sheriff suspecting that he might have been involved in manufacturing fake currency and a police team from Rajkot has left to take his custody from Ahmedabad police,” police sub inspector M L Rathod said.
